West Lombok was ever controlled by Balinese king of Karangsem kingdom during the
turn of 18th century. During that period the influence of Bali especially in West Lombok is so strong,
the cities such as Mataram, Ampenan and Cakranegara were built during this reign. If one has seen Bali
then visit west Lombok they will be aware that how strong is the influence of Bali, especially in the
cities and the way the local farmer cultivate their land. Compared to central and east Lombok where the
land look barren and no interesting places are exist there except the assemblage of people and
traditional life which is still very leg behind. The tradition of Bali also encourage the handicraft
and art work in Lombok such as weaving, terracotta and carving. Yet the original population of Lombok,
the Sasak has their original art which decorate current handicraft production. |
