East Java has many maountains, and one of the highland very popular for a trekking not only for local people is Tengger highland and the peak of Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru. This highland is now inhabited by local people who still keep very strongly their ancestor tradition that is the Hindu. According to the tradition they are the people of the Hindu kingdom of 15th century of Majapahit and fled from the area where Moslem was warmly welcame by local people since the religion giving promisse for the sorga. It is very different from the Hindu at the moment that to reach the heaven one had to make sometimes illogical tapa or hermitage that giving torture to the body by limiting very strictly the senses. The fact that more oriented doctrine of the Moslem has led most of Javanese converted their belief. But the people around Tengger had a different resolution, they moved to the highland and keep their tradition until today. This is one of the reason why Tengger with it's Mount Bromo peak become very popular in international travel due to the beauty of the nature and the unique tradition of the people around the nature reserve. Tengger and the surrounding is actually a natural reserve including Bromo mountain area, protected by the government as one of the most unique natural heritage of Indonesia. The trekking to Mount Bromo can be oragnized both from Ngaisari from the regent of Probolinggo nearer to Malang area or from Tosari, the area nearer to Surabaya. Both approaches are the same if traveler wanted to continue their trip to Yogyakarta or Central Java. |
