Sea Transportation in Bali

Bali is not reachable in good way by sea transport in the meaning regular schedule, although there are many intra-insular ships, yet it is not practical to make an arrangement by sea, unless the absence of air transport or land transport. Sea transport in Indonesia can be seen as two types one is under the management of short haul such as the transport on river, lakes and strait which is managed by Indonesian transport named P.T. ASDP, or Angkutan Sungai Danau dan Penyebrangan, and one is the Pelayaran Samudra or Ocean Transport which is under the management of PT. PELNI or PT. Pelayaran Indonesia. The ASDP's fleets such as the ferry boats are spreaded on all straits transport between close islands such as between Sumatra - Java, Java - Bali, Bali - Lombok, Lombok - Sumbawa and many others. While Pelayaran Samudra can be found from big sea ports such as Tanjung Priok Jakarta, Tanjung Perak se port Surabaya, Soekarno-Hatta south Sulawesi, and for Bali it is Benoa port. The condition of sea transport in Indonesia is still less standard compared to other countries. This is due to the operator's role in supervising all the enterprises or probably management knowledge need to be upgraded. Except for crossing short strait it is not suggested to take sea transport or in the absence of air transport. One popular place such as Komodo natural reserve is not reachable by Air from the closet airport such as Bima town in Sumbawa island or Labuhan Bajo in Flores island. So, from these two airports one has to sail or take a boat 7 hour from Sape, Bima or 4 hours from Labuhan Bajo. While the famous ethnic of Toraja in south Sulawesi which capital is unreachable by air, so one has to take land transport from Makassar to capital city of south Sulawesi with run time of 7 to 8 hours, as long as 325 kms one way. If there is a standard transportation between islands or certain ethnic groups in Indonesia, there are innumerable interests within the archipelago, not limited to the ethnic life but the beauty of nature such as sea, beaches, mountains, flora and fauna.
