Batam is one of developed island for Industrial
Estate in Indonesia, just within 45 minutes by fast ferry
boat from Singapore, one of the world trade center and really
close also to Johor, Malaysia. In the past, Batam island is
almost 100% forest, no cars and road available at this small
island. Since 1970 Batam has been developed as industrial
estate and the first industrial project was taking place at
Batu Ampar yard in 1968. Nowdays Batam as a major logistics
base for many of the world major contractors. Batam is the
largest electronics economic sector, followed by oil service
or construction and ship repair. Most of the people living
in Batam are young people, age between 20-30 years old and
still single. Economic condition in Batam is more closely
related to Singapore and in fact, Batam is one of peaceful
island in Indonesia. Many expatriate living in Batam and for
visiting Batam, the visitor must hold the Visa and passport
at least 6 month valid upon arrival in Batam. Batam island
is the biggest island offer Pulau Pinang, Pulau Lingga and
Pulau Singkep. There are a dozens of islands belong to the
province of Riau which center of administration is on the
island of Sumatra. With forming od Batam administrative authority
giving facility to the development of Batam industrial and
business zones. The facilities developed are included : Roads
and Bridges, more than 500 kms, 6 new bridges connecting
the island of Batam, Tonton, Nipah, Setoko, Rempang, Galang,
and the Galang Baru. Fresh Water, 6 water reservoirs
for drinking water are in use. The authority maintains water
treatment plants and distribution pipes to supply more then
one million people, which is now oversupplied in a great number.
The quality of fresh water has been set into world Health
Organization (WHO). To realize this project of fresh water
supply the work of Batam Administrative Authority has been
in co-operation with local and international companies. Electricity,
the supply of electricity is provided by National Electricity
Company the PLN, and partly by private companies, and some
establishments provide themselves with their own electricity
generator to ensure the continuity of power supply. Telecommunication,
the establishment of communication facilities on Batam is
known as one of the best in Indonesia. The project is worked
by PT. Telkom, Indosat, Telkomsel, Exelcomindo, Satelindo,
Byru and Lintas Artha. Currently the ability of network transmission
is said between 64 kps up to 4 mps. Seaport, there
are four seaport in Batam already in operation such as Sekupang,
Teluk Senimba, Nongsa, and Batu Ampar. For domestic ferry
terminal are used Sekupang and Telaga Punggur, and one move
terminal will be at Batam Center. The Batam center terminal
also planned to be able to serve cruise ships. Airport,
Batam has international airport named Hang Nadim Airport with
run way 4 kms long and 45 m wide, with the further plan that
the apron will have 170.000 square meters. Currently 4 boarding
bridges from 12 boarding bridges planned for the future. Trade
and Industry, currently the most developed industry in
Batam are electronic, such as printed circuit board, computer's
part, audio and video equipment, automotive part, and light
industry such as leather, shoes, garments, toys, consumer
products, health care product, and others. Medium industry
such as steel fabrication, pipe threading, oil exploration
equipment, offshore jacket, and heavy equipments.
