Visitors can find various type of villas in Ubud and surrounding such as area of Payangan, Pejeng, Lod Tunduh and as far as Sukawati area. The construction of many villas in Ubud has been encouraged by the increasing number of visitors to the area not just for day visit but for days or even weeks. The main interest of previously a small village with palace in the center has been its fertile art starting from oil painting, wood carving, music and dances. Toward the mid of 20th century Ubud was a village for the seat of a punggawa heda of region under the kingdom of Gianyar. Aside from its political status, the fact that ubud has original style of painting is one of the invaluable heritage not only for Ubud but for Bali. This painting style is called ubud painting which was modified by Dtuch artist Arie Smith and Walter Spies along with also Robert Bonnet a bit different style called Young Artist. This transformation of Ubud painting happened around 1930s with intruduction to outside world through various exhibition organized by Dutch artists with the support and facilitation by colonial government.

The introduction of Ubud art to other countries is the start of Ubud famous name, which has been attracting visitors not only artists to come to ubud but travel writers, antrhopologists, and various cultural interest researchers with photographers. With the permission, hostpitality and generousity of the people and the palace many artists foreign lived in Ubud not only during the era before independence but continued after the independence, even some become Indonesian such as Don Antonio Blanco.

In promoting the art of Ubud to various countries which brought name of ubud well known in Europe and United State of America, disclosed also the rurallife of the people at the villages around ubud with their hospitable, plurality and generousity aded more value to the interest of the area. This is the second factor that forms the image, beside various types of ancient sites originating from 700 years ago and youngger disclosing the fact that art has beenalready growing from long time ago. Historical sites such as Goa Gajah, Pura Pusering Jagat, Pura Kebo Edan, Yeh Pulu, and many stone sculptures carved between 14th to 16th century can be found around the area of pejeng, only 2 kms away from the town of Ubud.
