On the south water of Bali there are 6 small islands; Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, NusaDua, and Serangan island. Serangan island and NusaDua are the closest to Bali main land and the southern tip of Bali which is on the map looks like foot of Bali, originally was a separate island and geologically showing a new land up rise. The land is consist of lime stone or shell fossils from a sea bed. No paleonthological research yet be organized to this land to fixed the geological information. This foot of Bali now even known as Nusa Dua instead of the original 2 specs of Nusa Dua islands located on the east shore of Bali foot. The name of Nusa Dua is known as spoken widely from Bualu area was developed into tourist's resort. Actually what is known as Nusa Dua and before it was the village of Bualu. The original islands of Nusa Dua are not populated. It was only the resting place of fishermen or just to stop for a short fishing. About the name of Nusa there are many versions andforgotten myths in Bali. The myth says that a demon war was happened on southern Bali which was unending fierce battle. The generals of the demon became so irritated and angry, they came in a ruthless outrageous attitude damaging the land of south Bali. The people were so scared and were like unable to blink their eyes due to the flying smokes and wastes made the air into total darkness, and they thought themselves would not be living longer. After the war was finished, the pople on the island start to realized that they were still alive and some islands were still un sunk. To their surprised and thankful feeling they shouted " nu sa ", means " god bless ... our land still exist !!" With this myth than one of the land was called " Serangan " means besiege.. This myth can be proved as the indication of island name's origin, since both " Nusa " and " Serangan " are Malay words. Malay language was widely used both spoken and written during 8th century in Bali which is proved by some inscriptions of ancient Bali before the dynasty of Warmadewa ruling Bali since 978 AD. Nusa means land, and Dua means two, so Nusa Dua means the two islands. It is the same concept is Sasak tribe called small island such as the Gilis in Lombok which also means land. To the south west of Bali is an limited stretch of Indian ocean un-protected by any atoll or island up to southern pole. This open water continues along the southern beach of Java island, and Sumatra, a stretch of more than 1000 kms. But to the south and east Bali is protected by Australia, and lesser Sunda islands which are consist of more than 100 islands big and small. So, it is probably this stretch of nature has created frightening myth among the resident of Bali in the past by seeing some times high waves and earth quakes. Among those small island on south Bali, Nusa Penida is the biggest island and all Nusas are populated except Nusa Dua islands. Historically very little is known about those social life of the islands. The record about Nusa Penida for example was only made by His Majesty King Dalem Bekung in 1550, when a rebel was happened from the head of Nusa Penida named Dalem Bungkut" Dalem Bungkut did not loyal anymore with the throne of Gelgel, Bali and wanted to establish his power on the island. The rebellion was easily suppressed by the king in Gelgel, and still rule the Nusas. Other myth says that Nusa Penida as the main island of Nusas, was a very frightening island as it is home to the black magic practitioner, a witch called " Ratu Gede Macaling " means a Great Lady with long tusks". In the past in Bali mainland was a very strong magic practitioner who had made the people of Bali to often facing problem such as epidemics. That was why she was exiled to Nusa Penida and built for her a temple called Dalem Peed. Dalem Peed is now her worship. With the establishment of her refuge in Nusa Penida it was hoped that she will not giving trouble anymore to the people of Bali. Indeed the witch was not totally satisfied with her exile on so aloof place and she promised to herself that she will occasionally back again to Bali mainland to spread magic. Her hidden intension was revealed by Balinese, and at the beginning of wet season is said when she will back to Bali. At this time the people in Bali making a ceremony to appease her and not to give magic trouble. In the past when an epidemicspreaded in Bali normally the people will make a ceremony offered to the Ratu Gede Macaling who abide the Dalem Peed temple on Nusa Penida island. Nusa Penida as the biggest island has the biggest number of population, and due to it's barren land the economic life of the people has been difficult for over years. The people in the past only lived on fishing and making salt to be exported to Bali. The same as other islands when communication from Bali to outside world has been opened, the people started to cultivate seaweeds for export. Nusa Lembongan has become beach holidays with various cruise or catamaran visited the beach of Lembongan everyday. The development of tourists has also giving significant changes to the people living standard. Areas such as Jungut Batu village on Nusa Lembongan island giving some impression as Kuta Lombok or Kuta Bali 20 years ago, where simple bungalows are spreaded over the villages and beaches. While in Nusa Penida tourist facility development has not as Nusa Lembongan has reached yet. In fact there are many interesting places on Nusa Penida such as Dalem Peed temple, Natural cave, seaweed cultivations and traditional fishing villages. Transportation between islands has now sufficient using motorized boat called jukung or kapal. There are 3 ports in Bali from where people can embark boat to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. Those ports are Kusamba near Klungkung city, Sanur, and Benoa port. Comparison on nature characteristic of Bali foot, Nusa Dua, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and Serangan island suggests the same conclusion. Land with very thin life layer ( biological layer ), there is not enough cumulative dissociation of living remains due to the less favorable bacteria's habitat. The circulation of land surface layer is very slow since the element of chemical composition tend to homogenous. and chloric very much less acid. While good land for tropical cultivation at least a characteristic of land with pH3 composition. Reforestration to those island has just been successful only on part of Bali foot, especially along Uluwatu - Ungasan area, and other areas need acculturation of attitude that the people know the meaning of greenery
