Prostitution is believed to have been implicit with the existence of human being,
weather the practice has been given different meaning in the course of history
and parts of the world. No exception for Bali island, one can not remember when
Bali for the first time introduced with prostitution. Yet according to older people,
say the generation of 1930s who can still tell story about this, it was no any
type of disease relating to the habit of visiting prostitutes. According to their
knowledge sex transmitted disease first was heard around 1960s such as syphilis
or gonorrhea. Although such disease was infected visitors, in the lack of advanced
medicine, was easy to cure. It is far in contrary with these types of disease
in later years which was for the infected some met fatal situation of recurrent
relapses and even death. Again starting 1980s a new fatal disease such as HIV
reported to have reached Bali which is also suspected as sex transmitted disease,
narcotic use, and contaminated blood transfusion. This case increases the threat
to Balinese by intensity and variation. Since Bali or Indonesia is still live
with more guide of religion, awareness of this danger seems very low, an effort
to jump to an extreme measure such as admission that the prostitution is exist
publicly could not be done, it is rather deny its existence yet hate it attitude
looks preponderant. according to the discussion at Dewata TV headed by Vice Governor
Alit Kelakan on 3th of January it was disclosed that 14% of prostitutes have been
infected by HIV. This is very frightening factor unless government publish open
warning to the public, giving them serious attention both the prostitutes, people,
and all organizations to participate in the flight to the proliferation of this
disease. The most important is how to make informal leaders who is the most blind
people about this fact. The best way not to be infected by this disease is not
to visit prostitution and alert to practice sex outside partner. |
